Summer Harvest by Alexa Schleien

I was reading an article today on a website called Culinate, which features food and garden related information and I ran across scary information about genetically modified animals entering the food chain. (Read the article here  http://www.culinate.com/articles/features/genetically_engineered_meat_and_fish) Seeing this kind of article makes me realize how the work we do here at the Edible Schoolyard is not just important for the children and families who visit, but crucial to the health of people, other animals, and the entire ecosystem on our planet.  I don’t believe that inserting genes from one organism to another makes for a sustainable food system.  I want to grow and prepare my own food, buy local, real, whole foods, and eat what is in season because it is fresher, it tastes better, and it keeps me connected to the people around me and to the place I call home.
