The flock at the Edible Schoolyard at the Greensboro Children’s Museum is on the way to becoming a steady laying flock. Since last week, we’ve had three more eggs from our pullets (young hens). I have eleven birds from the same group in my home flock and got my first egg today from my young ones. It’s really great that we have a safe source of eggs for our kitchen at the Edible Schoolyard. Reading and hearing about the recall of half a billion eggs that may be contaminated with salmonella makes me think twice about every product I buy at the supermarket. Maybe when the Edible Schoolyard staff offers a chicken keeping workshop in the winter, we’ll have a large and interested audience thanks to the massive egg recall. Chickens are not only a great backyard pet, but two or three can provide enough eggs for a small family each week!
