A year ago on May 22, the Edible Schoolyard at the Greensboro Children’s Museum opened to the public. In that year, we have led programs and tours for school groups from pre-school to high school, as well as undergraduates studying education at local universities. We have hosted meetings for the Guilford County Partnership for Children, worked with Headstart classes from all over Guilford County, invited garden clubs to meet here, presented at local, statewide, and regional conferences, and grown hundreds of pounds of organic produce used in programs.
Some of our visitors are regulars-members who come for Busy Bees on Monday mornings, participants in our after school gardening classes, and families who make the Greensboro Children’s Museum a regular part of their play time each week. Other visitors have come from around the country and around the world, traveling from as far away as Finland!
We collect stories and quotes as a way to measure people’s reactions. One of my favorite moments was a 7 year old girl who dashed through the garden saying, “I’ve never been in a real garden before!”
Please join us on Friday, May 20 at our Green Acres Gala and our Backyard Birthday Bash on Saturday, May 21 for a weekend of fun celebrating the Greensboro Children’s Museum’s 12th birthday and the Edible Schoolyard’s 1st birthday.
