Today we welcomed six of the fifty members of the very first Food Corps cohort along with three of the folks from Agricultural Extension and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems who are organizing and overseeing their work here in North Carolina. These young people represent the future of wellness in this country. They are giving a year of their time to work with children and community partners to expand access to fresh, nutritious food all across the state. No doubt there will be challenges and frustrations along the way and tired bodies and minds as well. When they watch a young person tasting the first food they’ve ever grown and harvested, the rewards will be far greater than a large paycheck from a desk job! Good luck in your journeys, Food Corps members. May your gardens all grow green and your communities grow stronger in their connection to the earth.
